I received an email from Ken Krilla a few weeks ago and it broke my heart - his sister-in-law who I met at a gig a while ago is suffering from Friedreich's Ataxia. This is from his email:
"Karina is challenged with Friedreichs Ataxia (www.ataxia.org or www.frda.org) and is becoming more challenged by its effects. It is very emotional for me to see such a fun, brilliant person loose some of the capacities most of us take for granted. Karina graduated with her PhD in French Literature from Yale in May ... FA is a
degenerative and fatal condition. As helpless as I feel, I am empowered and I am calling upon friends to help me with this charity event...."
Please come out.

Lizard Lounge Residency!
JBE plays every Tuesday in August
Special guest: Dave Crossland

Powerful songwriting, a passion for justice, and a voice that can sing virtually anything make Dave Crossland one of the most talented and versatile singer-songwriters on the circuit today. Dave moves deftly between driving passion and whimsy while striking the socially relevant and the starkly personal. The Boston Globe describes Dave's songs "fiery and alluring," testing "the American dream against the American reality" with "a naturalistic sweep, a panoramic Americanism, that set them apart."
"Dave Crossland is the best singer-songwriter I've heard in years," says legendary songwriter John Stewart, a former Kingston Trio member and author of "Daydream Believer." He included Dave as the fourth member of Darwin's Army on Stewart's latest release, recently highlighted in Billboard Magazine. Dave's own recordings have been rated among the top ten acoustic albums on several radio stations across the US, including National Public Radio's "The Best of River City Folk," and "Music Americana" in Washington, D.C. Dave's music has been featured in Dirty Linen, published in Sing Out! and included on "The Best of Unsigned Acoustic Music 1998," by A-2-Z Music of New York City.

Lizard Lounge Residency!
JBE plays every Tuesday in August
Special guest: the Skills of Ortega
(Christine Baze's band)
21
More about the Skills of Ortega:
The Skills of Ortega is a collaborative project many years in the making. Christine Baze (lead vocals, piano, synth, songwriter), Stephen "Wacki" Serwacki (drums) and Dave Cronin (bass) have recently come together to create a project based on songwriting, grooves, and ambient textures.
Baze and Wacki met in 1998 and worked together periodically while each pursuing their own bands. Christine was involved in her original project, "christine baze" — singer/songwriter style with a pop flair, and Wacki with his long-standing band, "Boiler Room Six" — a Beastie Boy meets Rage Against the Machine rock. Fast friends and evil twins, Baze and Wacki committed to working together whenever they could.
In the spring of 2000, Wacki's band dismembered, and Baze was diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer — thus interrupting both musical careers. Wacki continued to work with other musicians while Baze fought the good fight — and won. In the winter of 2001, when the battle was over, Wacki and Baze decided to team up officially and create a new sound together.
Cronin, a member of Attic Stew for 7 years, then entered the picture. Cronin brings a rhythmic, driving groove to the band and rounds out this eclectic background of musicianship that makes up "The Skills of Ortega." The songs are melody based, down-tempo grooves that hook you as much as they move you.

Lizard Lounge Residency!
JBE plays every Tuesday in August
Special guest: Aaron Shadwell
21
more about Aaron Shadwell:
For Aaron Shadwell, the desire to be a singer/songwriter is rooted in growing - healing - telling the story to inspire others to do the same. "It's about process, putting aside where I'm going and concentrating on how I'm going to get there."
Born in Kansas and raised on a steady diet of blues and folk, Aaron was an avid Robert Johnson listener by the time his grade school friends were discovering Def Leopard. Yet, his humble ear also welcomed pop radio, from which Aaron quickly gained his sense of melody and song form. After testing the waters of Boston in subway stations and Harvard Square, Aaron moved into the small club scene, and currently frequents The Middle East and The Lizard Lounge. The live experience proved to be an organic workshop for refining his material into more cohesive neo-delta compositions.
The synthesis of Aaron's enchantment with blues guitar, folk storytelling, and pop-driven hooks is apparent from his forthcoming, solo acoustic EP Use What You Find.

JBE plays every Tuesday in August
Special guest: Senegalese Rap Star - SHIFFAI (feat. Nomadic)
21
Here's more about Shiffai:
Hailing from Africa's hip-hop capital, Dakar Senegal, Shiffai began rapping on the streets at the age of 13. In 1993 he conceived and was the lead MC for Senegal's legendary Slam Revolution. Rapping primarily in Wolof, Shiffai (which means "The Remedy" in Wolof) and his crew rapped about politics, corruption, life in the African ghetto, and other issues of injustice. Shiffai has never been afraid to confront the truth in his rhymes whether in Wolof or English. "Music is something that I have been put on this Earth to do. Something that I do to bring about a higher consciousness in my audiences minds." In 2000 Shiffai went from rocking the crowds in Dakar to honing his skills in the US where he has been working on his debut album "The Chosen One". Creating a flow based in his Wolof rhyming style Shiffai has carved a sound that successfully fuses both English, street slang and Wolof to create a Senegalese-style patois never heard before. With a flow unrivaled in a business dominated by thugged out clones and hip-hop fakers, Shiffai brings straight from Africa, the true spirit and embodiment of hip hop.

Jim teams with renowned political satirist Barry Crimmins for an evening of music and muckraking.
The Human Movement is excited to present Crim & Jims Spring Offensive 07 at the Asheville Community Theatre on Saturday, April 14th. Join nationally renowned political satirist, activist, and author Barry Crimmins along with brilliant performing songwriter Jim Infantino (of Jim's Big Ego) as they celebrate spring by defrosting democracy. And doesnt it need a good thawing at the end of a seemingly endless political winter brought on by a coldhearted front that has lingered over the nation. A good ole time populist revival. The kind of show that makes you leave saying, Its about time. Because it is!

Should you make that big move? Is it time to dump your boyfriend? Demand a raise? Run for office? ASK THE ORACLE - All your questions answered in song!
Back by popular demand, Jims Big Ego re-teams with writer/actor/musician and radio mystic, Andras Jones for the return of an original interactive theater production entitled The Ego & The Oracle - an evening of rock and roll divination.
Part experimental theater, part rock and roll cabaret, part mystic mind-expansion, The Ego & The Oracle is a live stage spectacular where Magic 8 Ball meets iPod Shuffle. The premise is as simple as it is unique. Audience members are invited on stage to ask questions of The Oracle. They then spin a wheel containing Jims Big Egos songs. When the wheel stops, the band spontaneously performs the chosen song, which in turn is interpreted as the answer to the question. The outcome can be humorous or moving, often both at once. It is a show about synchronicity and its hard to experience it without getting the sense that the universe is not only in tune, but that it also has a great sense of rhythm.

Way back in the distant past - 1989 to be exact, 4 very young songwriters got together to form a travelling troupe - a tromp of troubadours, a gaggle of a guygroup, a mess of minstrals. They called themselves END CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTIONS and released an album called "resume speed".

We do so through our legendary listening venue, music school, artist grants and outreach programs. We cultivate a diverse mix of musical traditions, where the emphasis is on the relationship between performers and audience and teachers and students. Located in Harvard Square, Passim serves Cambridge and the broader region by featuring local, national and international artists. Originally from Winchester, MA, Lindsay currently splits her time between Toronto and Boston. She has already released two EPs and a full album, and is currently working on a fourth release with the support of grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Factor Canada.
Greater Boston’s Original All-Benefit Coffeehouse
Celebrating 35 seasons of great music and charity.
The Second Friday Coffeehouse has been bringing great music to Belmont since 1985. We mostly present acoustic music -- Americana, singer-songwriter, folk, bluegrass -- although sometimes we do raise the roof with some rock and roll on occasion. Most of our headlining acts are locally-based, although we feature performers from within our amazingly talented church community, our church Youth Group, and we host an open mic each year too.
Each year we select a number of charitable organizations to be featured at one our monthly concerts. At the end of our concert year we distribute our net proceeds -- from a combination of our season ticket and concert sales -- among all of our chosen charities.
Ultimately, our goal is to bring great music to Belmont and support a great charity every month! Join us!

I will be on a panel at the Boskone 57 Science Fiction Convention. It's my first time on a panel. Come see me mix it up.
Program Description:
You can’t keep a good (or bad) superhero down for long … because they always seem to come back in the next scene, chapter, or film. That’s their essential nature: They defy death! But is that really a good thing? Should we let superheroes fade gently into that good night? Are we finally tiring of these endlessly buoyant characters?

Why do so many SF writers enjoy playing in this subgenre? Are they simply reporting reasonable extrapolations, because we’re clearly doomed real soon due to climate, corporations, overcrowding, video games, superbugs, big meteorites, and/or reality TV? Is it just because story thrives on conflict, and post-apocalyptic landscapes offer so much scope for disagreements—with chainsaws? Our panelists take a look at some of the more interesting post-apocalyptic worlds as they discuss why they are so compelling and what makes them work.

Jim solo in the round with David Massingil & Terry Kitchen
191 Highland AveSomerville, MA
NYC singer/songwriter David Massengill joins Boston singer/songwriters Jim Infantino and Terry Kitchen for an evening of insightful original folk songs at the Somerville Armory Cafe. The concert will feature a solo set by each artist, followed by a round robin song swap. There's a $15 suggested donation at the door. The cafe features sandwiches, soups, coffees and desserts, and free parking in back.
Tennessee native David Massengill has been a fixture on the Greenwich Village folk scene since the 1970s. He's had songs recorded by Joan Baez, The Roches, and Nanci Griffith. He's recorded six albums, including Coming Up for Air, which includes his classic songs "The Road to Fairfax County," "My Name Joe" and "Number One in America." His latest album is Dave on Dave: A Tribute to Dave Van Ronk. Aside from performing solo on guitar and dulcimer, he was half of the duo The Folk Brothers with legendary folk songwriter Jack Hardy. David is also a master storyteller, and has published several books of original stories. Called "a master of vivid lyrical imagery" by The Boston Globe, Massengill captivates audiences with his poignant story-songs, his effortless melodies, and his soft-spoken but often funny persona.
Jim Infantino has been writing and singing his own brand of off-kilter folk music in the New York / New England area since the early '80s when he was a underage performer heading into Dave Van Ronk's open mic at The Speakeasy on Macdougal Street. His songs have been described as satirical, witty, sardonic, urbane, funny, heartbreaking, catchy, philosophical and razor sharp. He writes from a shifting perspective of human beings confronted by a rapidly changing whir of technology, work, love, death, money, facts and belief. Sometimes political, sometimes personal, sometimes abstract, his songs weave in the hint of humor when you expect sadness and tragedy when you expect levity. Since 1996 he has been performing mostly with his band: Jim's Big Ego, who describe themselves as "the greatest band in the history of recorded music" and compare themselves to "the great wall of China, Antarctica, and other things you can see from space." With the band he has released 7 full-length CDs adding to his previous 2 solo releases. He is also a novelist, with his debut book The Wakeful Wanderer's Guide to New New England and Beyond winning the 2017 Wattys Newcomer's Award. He currently lives in Boston, practicing and teaching meditation. His blog can be found at jiminfantino.com and the band site is bigego.com
Called "one of New England's best songwriters" by The Boston Globe, Terry Kitchen creates songs that are portraits of ordinary people and emotions, captured with extraordinary compassion, honesty and humor. He's been performing on folk stages across the country since the 1990s, releasing a dozen albums filled with literate musical storytelling, supple guitar playing and distinctive, intimate vocals. His 2021 CD Lost Songs reached #13 on the national Folk-DJ chart, and his songs have won the Mid-Atlantic and USA Song Contests and been runner-up in the John Lennon Song Contest. In the 1980s he was the leader of the groundbreaking Boston band Loose Ties, whose experiences he recounts in his novel Next Big Thing, called "a great debut novel" by The San Francisco Book Review. He also published a short story collection, Coping Mechanisms, in 2020. More on Terry at terrykitchen.com

notloB's first concert was Sometymes Why, presented June 2, 2007 at the Loring-Greenough House in Jamaica Plain. 16 years to the day and 212 concerts later, we will be celebrating our 16th anniversary with notloB veteran Jim Infantino, “songwriter, novelist, nerd” supported by Jesse Flack, who, together, comprise half of Jim's Big Ego – “the greatest band in the history of recorded music”. “Jim's Big Ego's secret to awesomeness is singer, songwriter, and all around super-genius, Jim Infantino. Armed with the innate ability to create songs that are more brilliant than all others in history, Infantino gives the band the gift of greatness.” Or so says its own publicity.
